Description

Asian Beef Bowls are a quick and flavorful stir-fried ground beef dish infused with a savory blend of hoisin, oyster sauce, soy sauce, and aromatic seasonings. Perfectly cooked with garlic, onion, and scallions, this easy recipe comes together in just 12 minutes, making it ideal for a delicious weeknight dinner served over rice or cauliflower rice for a low-carb option.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Hoisin Sauce (or substitute with Oyster Sauce)
  • 2 tbsp Oyster Sauce (or substitute with 1 1/2 tbsp Hoisin Sauce)
  • 1 tbsp Chinese cooking wine (or Mirin, dry sherry, sake, or any rice wine)
  • 2 1/2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 2 tsp white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper (or substitute with black pepper)

Cooking Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp oil (vegetable or neutral oil)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 500 g / 1 lb lean beef mince (ground beef)
  • 1/2 cup shallots / scallions, sliced (plus extra for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a bowl, mix together the hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, Chinese cooking wine, dark soy sauce, white sugar, sesame oil, and white pepper until well combined.
  2. Cook Aromatics: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the minced garlic and finely chopped onion, cooking for about 1 minute or until the onion starts to brown and becomes fragrant.
  3. Brown the Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook while breaking it up with a spatula until all the meat changes from red to brown.
  4. Add the Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked beef. Continue cooking for about 2 more minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has mostly evaporated and the beef is fully cooked through. Optionally, add a splash of water to cook the beef more if desired.
  5. Finish and Serve: Stir in the sliced shallots/scallions to the beef mixture. Serve the beef over steamed rice or cauliflower rice for a low-carb alternative. Garnish with additional shallots and sesame seeds as desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute hoisin sauce with oyster sauce and vice versa in the sauce if needed.
  • Chinese cooking wine can be replaced with Mirin, dry sherry, sake, or any rice wine.
  • White pepper can be substituted with black pepper if unavailable.
  • For a healthier low-carb version, serve with cauliflower rice instead of traditional rice.
  • Use lean ground beef for a better texture and less grease.
