Ingredients
Scale
Donut Batter
- 1 box spice cake mix
- 1 1/2 cups applesauce
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp apple pie spice
Cinnamon Sugar Topping
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the donuts.
- Prepare Donut Pan: Lightly spray a donut pan with non-stick baking spray to ensure easy removal of the donuts after baking.
- Mix Batter: In a large bowl, combine the spice cake mix, applesauce, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and apple pie spice. Stir well until the ingredients are fully incorporated and form a smooth batter.
- Fill Donut Pan: Pour the prepared batter evenly into the donut pan cavities, filling each about three-quarters full to allow room for rising.
- Bake Donuts: Place the donut pan in the preheated oven and bake for 12 to 14 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean.
- Cool Donuts: Remove the pan from the oven and allow the donuts to cool in the pan for about 5 minutes to set.
- Remove and Coat Donuts: Carefully remove the donuts from the pan. In a shallow dish, mix together the 1 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon. While the donuts are still slightly warm, gently coat each donut in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly covered.
Notes
- You can use homemade applesauce or store-bought; unsweetened is best to control sweetness.
- For a different flavor twist, try adding chopped nuts or raisins to the batter.
- Ensure the donuts are slightly warm when coating with cinnamon sugar so the sugar sticks well.
- Store donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for longer freshness.
