For the topping:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
For the cake:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup whole milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
- Make the topping: Melt 1/2 cup butter in a saucepan. Stir in brown sugar and cook until smooth. Pour into pan, arrange apple slices over caramel.
- Prepare the cake: Whisk dry ingredients. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs and vanilla. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk.
- Bake: Pour batter over apples and bake for 40–45 minutes. Cool, invert onto a plate.
