For the cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. Make the topping: Melt 1/2 cup butter in a saucepan. Stir in brown sugar and cook until smooth. Pour into pan, arrange apple slices over caramel.
  3. Prepare the cake: Whisk dry ingredients. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs and vanilla. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk.
