Description

A hearty and flavorful Chicken Sausage Broccoli Orzo recipe combining savory chicken sausage with tender broccoli and creamy Parmesan, all cooked together in a one-pan stovetop dish. This easy-to-make meal is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner packed with protein and vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

Proteins and Dairy

  • 1 lb chicken sausage, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Pantry Items

  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Sausage: In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced chicken sausage and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: In the same pan, add chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Toast the Orzo: Add the orzo to the pan and stir to coat with the onion and garlic mixture. Cook for 2 minutes, allowing the orzo to toast slightly.
  4. Cook Orzo and Broccoli: Pour in the chicken broth and add the broccoli florets. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer for 8-10 minutes, or until the orzo and broccoli are tender.
  5. Combine Ingredients: Stir the cooked chicken sausage back into the pan. Add the grated Parmesan cheese and dried oregano. Mix well until the cheese is melted and everything is combined.
  6. Season: Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste.
  7. Serve: Serve immediately, garnished with additional Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute Italian sausage for chicken sausage if desired.
  • For a creamier texture, stir in a little cream or milk before serving.
  • Red pepper flakes add a nice heat, but can be omitted for a milder dish.
  • Fresh oregano can be used instead of dried for more vibrant flavor.
  • Use low-sodium chicken broth to reduce salt content.
