Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup long-grain white rice (uncooked)
- 1 packet French onion soup mix (about 1 oz)
- 2 cups beef broth
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
- ½ cup French-fried onions
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Cook ground beef: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef thoroughly. Drain off any excess grease and season the beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to enhance the flavor.
- Combine rice and soup mix: In a mixing bowl, stir together the uncooked rice, French onion soup mix, and beef broth until well combined.
- Add beef and sour cream: Incorporate the cooked ground beef and sour cream into the rice mixture, mixing everything evenly.
- Transfer and top with cheese: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake covered: Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes to allow the rice to cook through and the flavors to meld.
- Bake uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.
- Add French-fried onions: Sprinkle the French-fried onions evenly on top of the casserole and bake for another 5 minutes until they are crispy and golden brown.
- Cool and serve: Let the casserole cool slightly before serving to allow it to set and make serving easier.
Notes
- You can substitute mozzarella with Swiss cheese or a blend for a different flavor.
- If you prefer, use low-fat sour cream to reduce fat content.
- For a richer casserole, add a handful of sautéed mushrooms or caramelized onions before baking.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
