Description

A comforting French Onion Ground Beef and Rice Casserole featuring savory ground beef, tender rice cooked in beef broth with French onion soup mix, topped with melted cheese and crispy French-fried onions. Perfect for an easy family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice (uncooked)
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix (about 1 oz)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup French-fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook ground beef: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef thoroughly. Drain off any excess grease and season the beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to enhance the flavor.
  3. Combine rice and soup mix: In a mixing bowl, stir together the uncooked rice, French onion soup mix, and beef broth until well combined.
  4. Add beef and sour cream: Incorporate the cooked ground beef and sour cream into the rice mixture, mixing everything evenly.
  5. Transfer and top with cheese: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese evenly over the top.
  6. Bake covered: Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes to allow the rice to cook through and the flavors to meld.
  7. Bake uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.
  8. Add French-fried onions: Sprinkle the French-fried onions evenly on top of the casserole and bake for another 5 minutes until they are crispy and golden brown.
  9. Cool and serve: Let the casserole cool slightly before serving to allow it to set and make serving easier.

Notes

  • You can substitute mozzarella with Swiss cheese or a blend for a different flavor.
  • If you prefer, use low-fat sour cream to reduce fat content.
  • For a richer casserole, add a handful of sautéed mushrooms or caramelized onions before baking.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
