Ingredients
Scale
For the Mushroom and Onion Gravy
- 1 large yellow onion (sliced)
- 4-6 oz fresh white mushrooms (sliced)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 envelope brown gravy mix
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley (coarsely chopped)
- 3 tbsp ketchup
- 3 tbsp spicy brown mustard
For the Hamburger Patties
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup onion (minced)
- 3 tbsp whole milk
- 1 tbsp seasoned salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Cook Onions and Mushrooms: Place sliced onions and mushrooms into a large, heavy pan with vegetable oil, and cook on medium heat until onions are translucent and tender, about 15 minutes. This slow sauté helps develop a rich base flavor for the gravy.
- Prepare Patties Mixture: While the onions and mushrooms are cooking, in a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, minced onion, milk, seasoned salt, and garlic powder. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute all ingredients.
- Form Patties: Evenly portion out the ground beef mixture, shape into balls, then press each into a patty. Create an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb or finger to prevent puffing during cooking.
- Set Aside Cooked Vegetables: Once the onions and mushrooms are cooked, remove them from the pan and set aside for later use in the gravy.
- Brown Patties: Place raw patties into the same pan and brown over medium heat for 5 minutes per side to develop flavor and texture.
- Drain Excess Grease: Remove the patties from the pan and drain off all but 1-2 tablespoons of grease to avoid greasy gravy while retaining flavor.
- Prepare Gravy: Add the brown gravy mix, beef broth, parsley, ketchup, and spicy brown mustard to the pan. Stir well, then add the cooked onions and mushrooms back into the pan to combine flavors.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Place the browned patties into the pan with the gravy. Cook on medium heat for 12-15 minutes, allowing patties to cook through and gravy to thicken.
Notes
- Indenting the center of patties prevents them from puffing up and ensures even cooking.
- Use fresh beef broth for a richer gravy flavor.
- Adjust seasoning to taste, especially the seasoned salt and mustard, according to preference.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
- Serve with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
