Description

This Heart-Shaped Chocolate Flan is a decadent, creamy dessert combining the rich flavors of chocolate and caramel in a smooth, custard base. Perfect for special occasions, this elegant flan is baked in heart-shaped molds for a beautiful presentation that’s both indulgent and comforting.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramel

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp water

Chocolate Flan

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Caramel: In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Cook over medium heat without stirring until the sugar dissolves and turns golden brown, approximately 5-7 minutes. Be vigilant to prevent burning the caramel.
  2. Coat the Molds: Immediately pour the hot caramel into the bottom of heart-shaped molds or a baking dish. Tilt and swirl the molds gently to evenly coat the base with caramel. Allow the caramel to cool and harden while you prepare the flan mixture.
  3. Prepare the Chocolate Flan Mixture: In a blender, add whole milk, heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Blend the ingredients together until the mixture is smooth and uniformly combined.
  4. Fill the Molds: Pour the chocolate flan mixture over the cooled caramel in each mold, distributing evenly among them.
  5. Bake the Flan: Place the molds in a water bath to ensure gentle and even cooking. Bake in a preheated oven at 325°F (163°C) for 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool and Refrigerate: Remove the flans from the water bath. Let them cool to room temperature before transferring to the refrigerator. Chill for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flan to fully set and develop its flavor.
  7. Serve: Carefully unmold the chocolate flan onto serving plates, slice if needed, and serve chilled for a luscious dessert experience.

Notes

  • Use heart-shaped molds to create an appealing presentation perfect for romantic occasions or celebrations.
  • Ensure the caramel does not burn, as this will impart a bitter taste to the flan.
  • A water bath is essential to prevent the custard from cracking and to achieve a silky smooth texture.
  • Refrigeration time is crucial; do not rush chilling as it allows the flan to set properly.
  • For an extra touch, garnish with whipped cream or fresh berries before serving.
