For the Crust:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract


Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or grease.
  2. Make the Crust: Mix 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 cup softened butter until crumbly. Press into the pan and bake for 10 minutes.
  3. Add Pecans: Sprinkle chopped pecans over the hot crust.
  4. Prepare the Caramel: Melt 2/3 cup butter, brown sugar, and salt in a saucepan. Boil gently, then remove from heat, stir in vanilla, and pour over the pecans.
  5. Bake Again: Bake for 15–18 minutes until bubbly.
  6. Add Chocolate: Sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot bars, let melt, then spread evenly.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • You can use walnuts instead of pecans for a variation.
  • For a salty-sweet twist, top with flaky sea salt after spreading the chocolate.
